Its current name comes from the Middle English gingivere, but ginger dates back over 3,000 years to the Sanskrit srngaveram meaning "horn root" with reference to its appearance. In Greek it was ziggiberis, and in Latin, zinziberi. Although it was well-known to the ancient Romans, it nearly disappeared in Europe after the fall of the Roman Empire. Thanks to Marco Polo's trip to the Far East, ginger came back into favor in Europe. Queen Elizabeth I of England is credited with the invention of the gingerbread man, which became a popular Christmas treat.

Ginger (botanical name Zingiber officinale and in the same family as turmeric and cardamom) is native to Southern Asia and has long been a staple addition to the Asian diet. It is common in the Caribbean Islands, where it grows wild. Jamaican ginger is prized for its flavor, and Jamaica provides most of the world's supply, followed by India, Africa and China. The gnarled, bumpy root of the ginger plant is the source of this wonderful herb.

Herbalists recognize ginger as a carrier herb and often use it in small quantities with other herbs to spread it through the human system at a faster rate. In China, half of all herbal formulas contain some form of ginger.

The two major active ingredients in ginger are terpenes and ginger oil. These two, plus other active ingredients in ginger, provide antiseptic, lymph-cleansing, circulation-stimulating, and mild constipation relief qualities along with a potent perspiration-inducing action that is quite effective in cleansing the system of toxins.

Researchers studied the effects of ginger on mice. Those fed 500 micrograms of gingerol (the source of ginger's spiciness) three times a week for two weeks developed fewer tumors after being injected with human colorectal carcinoma cells. Mice fed gingerol also survived longer, implying that the tumors grew slower, said Ann Bode, at the Hormel Institute at the University of Minnesota.

"The mice were a good (model) for human tumor development because they had no immune system," Bode said, adding that they were more susceptible for developing cancer once they were implanted with human colon cancer cells.

But fed gingerol, the mice developed a "marked suppression" of cancer cells, leading researchers to conclude the extract fueled apoptosis, or cell death, or interfered with a cellular transcription process.

"It's likely that it's inducing cell death," she said.

Ginger has been used since antiquity for preventing digestive problems, nausea, sea sickness and motion sickness. It also has shown to work against skin, ovarian, colon and breast cancer tumors. But it has not been scientifically tested for halting the progression of colon cancer, until now.

Muscles and Joints
Ginger has been undergoing trials in Denmark to discover the herb's anti-inflammatory potential in the treatment of arthritis. Over 75% of those involved in the trials said they experienced relief in pain and swelling.

In June 1999 a new drug called Zinaxin was launched in the UK to treat arthritis. It was a dietary supplement based on highly concentrated extracts of Ginger. Danish scientists developed the drug after extensive research into the effects of hundreds of natural substances, finding that Ginger was the most effective.

Numerous studies have confirmed the fact that Ginger can work as effectively as aspirin to help clear the build up in clogged arteries. As well as this, Ginger has been found to strengthen the cardiac muscle and lower serum cholesterol levels.

Other Uses
Ginger's anti-bacterial properties are recognised by the Japanese who use it as an antidote to fish poisoning, especially from sushi. Ginger has been found to kill the anisakis lavae (a parasite that infects fish and marine animals and can be harmful to humans if ingested).

Ginger protects against stomach ulcers caused by Helicobacter pylori and is effective against the growth of many bacteria including E Coli, and Salmonella. At the same time it actually helps the growth of the beneficial bacteria Lactobacillus.

The International Journal of Obesity reported in October 1992 that Ginger burns calories and so aids weight loss.

*2 cups (1/2 l) milk
*1 cups (1/4 l) water

Peel the ginger and grate or slice very fine. Simmer very slowly for about 20 minutes in the water. Now add up to 2 cups (1/2 l) milk and let it boil up. Remove from the heat and sweeten with honey. Ginger tea is often taken in small sips over the course of the day, as required. In the morning and before meals it stimulates digestion; on cold winter afternoons it warms and protects from flu. Many women take the tea after miscarriages, abdominal surgery and hysterectomies.

Ginger tea is so effective against ailments of the reproductive and digestive systems because it stimulates circulation and supports a good blood supply to these organs. Bloating can be treated with this tea, by adding a pinch of cinnamon. In the presence of stomach ulcers, however, modest amounts of this tea are recommended and the quantity of ginger can be cut down. Similarly, in the early weeks of pregnancy, the further stimulation of blood flow into the abdomen is not recommended, so go easy on ginger at this time. Modest amounts, however, are a fantastic remedy for morning sickness nausea.
