Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) is now widely recognized as a medical condition that affects some women of childbearing age in many ways. Premenstrual Syndrome is related to menstrual hormones and can present itself with physical and psychological symptoms.

There are over 150 symptoms associated with PMS and the number and type of symptoms suffered varies from person to person. The severity of the symptoms can also vary each month. Among the most commonly experienced are:

bloating, headaches, irritability, weight gain, skin problems, mood swings & depression, aggression, fatigue, breast tenderness, poor concentration, and tearfulness.

Other symptoms include tension, anger, anxiety, panic attacks, mental confusion, sinus problems, asthma, epilepsy, styes, acne, alcohol abuse, craving for sweet things, binge eating and backache. No woman experiences all of these symptoms at the same time.

Chaste Tree is probably the most important herb in relation to helping PMS. It has been widely studied in relation to PMS and has shown to be extremely helpful in re-establishing a normal balance of hormones. Chastetree works on the pituitary gland and has a balancing effect on the hormones especially in the second half of the cycle which is why it is such an important herb for PMS symptoms.

Fem-J, Dong Quai, Evening Primrose Oil, Calcium and 5-HTP are also very helpful for PMS.

Menopause and Hot Flashes

The average American woman reaches menopause in her late 40s or early 50s. This powersurge or change of life is quite a transition. The right herbs and vitamins can make both PMS and the transition to menopause much easier. Thirty percent of US women have used HRT - hormone replacement therapy for at least five years. An American Cancer study reveals in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) that women who used estrogen replacement therapy for at least 10 years are twice as likely to die of ovarian cancer than women who never used it.

Hot flashes, sometimes accompanied by sweating and flushing, are your bodys response to declining estrogen levels. During a hot flash, which typically lasts from 1 to 5 minutes, your heart beats faster and your skin temperature rises. Hot flashes are the most common symptom of estrogen loss.

Hot flashes can be a difficult experience emotionally as well as physically. Some women report feeling anxious, embarrassed, angry or depressed during hot flashes.

Although women experience menopause at different times in their lives and tend to struggle with different emotional issues at each stage, the physiological result is the same. Your ovaries produce less and less estrogen, which results in symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, and vaginal dryness. These symptoms can be disturbing. For instance, night sweats can disrupt your sleep, causing you to feel tired and irritable during the day. This can be called the Cascade Effect. We do not know why hot flashes last only a few months in some women, while in others they persist for years or never occur at all.

According to the National Women's Health Information Center, the following lifestyle changes may help reduce the severity or frequency of your hot flashes:

  • Drink a cool glass of water at the beginning of a hot flash.

  • Avoid alcohol or caffeinated drinks. These chemicals increase the discomfort of hot flashes.

  • Cut down on red wine, chocolate and aged cheeses. They contain a chemical that can trigger hot flashes by affecting the brain's temperature control.

  • Don't smoke -- it aggravates hot flashes.

  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing made of cotton.

  • At home, lower your thermostat; at work, carry a small portable fan.

  • Sleep with lightweight blankets.

  • Dress in layers, so you can remove some clothing if you suddenly feel hot.

The South American herb MACA is very beneficial for hot flashes and other menopausal symptoms. We also have Change of Life - COL with Black Cohosh.

Consider trying aromatherapy. Clary Sage is the ultimate women's oil for pregnancy child birth and labor, difficult menstruation, PMS, menopause hot flashes and postpartum depression - a hormone balancer par excellence. It acts as a uterine tonic, encourages labor and stimulates contractions. This oil is a woman's friend for life.

Native to the north Mediterranean coast, Clary Sage was used by the Greeks and Romans for its euphoric, sensual and aphrodisiac qualities.

It relieves stress and tension and sore muscles and is said to promote pleasant dreams and enhance dream recall.

Clary Sage oil has a reputation for helping aging, dry skin and wrinkles by improving cell regeneration and preventing hair loss.

A lot of women crave sugar, salt, fatty foods - sugary foods are a big one," agrees Susan M. Lark, MD, a faculty member at Stanford University and author of Premenstrual Syndrome Self- Help Book: A Woman's Guide to Feeling Good All Month. "They eat the wrong foods; they eat oreos or an ice cream bar or chocolates. That just makes it worse." The result is a quick upswing in your blood-sugar level; followed by a rapid decline - and then you're hungry again.

It sounds counterintuitive, but foods can help relieve PMS cravings, says Lark. When PMS cravings strike, she suggests you fight back with grains and beans, or tuna on a piece of rye crisp or a rice cake.

"If you want to slow down absorption of the carbs, add a little oil like mayonnaise or almond butter," Lark says. "That will really cut your craving."

Portion Control

Perhaps the best way to cut down on PMS cravings is to change how you eat more than what you eat. By eating six small meals a day, you can help keep your blood sugar stable. Adopting this meal plan often helps women avoid cravings. You're not eating more, just small amounts more often.

There maybe no PMS diet, however good results occur by following a "rule of halves" to manage cravings and other PMS symptoms.

For example, breakfast can be a half-cup of whole grain cereal with berries and low-fat milk. At midmorning, have a handful of whole-grain crackers with carrot or celery sticks or half a banana. At lunchtime, eat a half a sandwich made with lean turkey on whole-wheat bread and half an apple. Two to three hours later, snack on a half-cup of low fat yogurt or cottage cheese - or the other half of your sandwich - with the rest of your apple. The rule of halves often helps alleviate women's concern that they will be eating too much and gaining weight.

Supplements For Women

Since most women have problems meeting their nutritional needs through their diet, many experts recommend dietary supplements.

Lark highly recommends taking 50 to 100 mg, once or twice a day, of a dietary supplement containing 5-HTP (5-hydroxy-L-tryptophan), an amino acid that the body converts to serotonin, along with 25 to 100 mg a day of a vitamin B complex to stabilize blood sugar and to help the 5HTP conversion.

Considered a natural mood enhancer, 5-HTP is a natural supplement, not an FDA approved medicine. It is derived from the seeds of the Griffonia simplicifolia, a West African medicinal plant. Maca also helps mood and energy levels.

Products with 5-HTP are very helpful for insomnia, depression, obesity, and in children with attention deficit disorder.

Calcium Connection

The first large study to look at total calcium consumption in adolescents found that girls who consumed more calcium weighed less and had lower body fat. The findings were presented at the Experimental Biology 2003 meeting in San Diego, as part of the American Society for Nutritional Sciences program.

When you have adequate levels of calcium and magnesium at the right ratio, chocolate cravings may ease. Magnesium is important to regulate muscle relaxation, blood sugar, and to promote sound sleep - all particularly important during PMS. Magnesium also increases calcium absorption in the body.

The benefits of calcium and magnesium for PMS are well supported. A study of 500 women published in the August 1998 issue of The American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology reported that 1200 mg a day of chewable calcium carbonate reduced symptoms of PMS by nearly 50%. A 1998 study in The Journal of Women's Health found that 200 mg a day of magnesium reduced PMS fluid retention, breast tenderness, and bloating by 40%.

If you eat toast, bagels, or English muffins, you can easily cut calories by changing the spread use. A tablespoon of Parkay has 90 calories, a tablespoon of Philadelphia Cream Cheese has 100 calories, but a tablespoon of Smucker's Red Raspberry Preserves has just 50 calories. If you prefer the taste of butter or cream cheese (or want to cut down on your sugars), you should consider switching to Olivio, instead of butter or margarine.

It is the first buttery-tasting spread made with olive oil. Olivio contains zero trans-fatty acids per serving and only one gram of saturated fat. Butter has 7.
